Day master 101
A saju chart has four pillars — year, month, day and hour — each with a heavenly stem and an earthly branch. The stem of your day pillar is called the day master (日干): it stands for you.
There are ten stems: a yang and a yin one for each of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). A tall pine and a blooming flower are both wood — but they glow differently.
Because the day changes at a precise time and the hour pillar follows true solar time, people born around midnight can switch types — that is why we ask for your birth time and place.
